Dear Resident,
The Karns Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) is a professional emergency service organization dedicated to the protection of lives and property for you – our neighbor. Your financial support equips and trains a staff of paid and volunteer firefighters certified by the State of Tennessee in firefighting, emergency medical first response, and vehicle extrication. The community’s past support has enabled your department to provide services to you through equipment improvements, training, and lower insurance rates.
The Karns Volunteer Fire Department has not met the funding levels needed to continue to offer you the level of service you and I want. The Karns, Ball Camp, Solway and Hardin Valley areas have doubled in the number of residential homes and businesses, while the level of donations to fund the Karns Fire department has remained level and not kept up with the escalating costs.
Knoxville Fire Department is funded by a property tax and Rural Metro Fire Department is funded through a subscription program and bills non-members for service. The Karns Volunteer Fire Department receives no tax dollars to provide you this service. KVFD has always been funded by your donations, but the cost of providing service exceeds the level of donations. Last year only 21% of the residents served by the Karns Volunteer Fire Department donated. This is down from the high of 44% in previous years. Average donation amounts were less than $100.

The Karns Fire Department currently has plans to rebuild Station 402, to the new location at Campbell Station and Hardin Valley. The cost to build this station is $1 million. KVFD also needs to replace the first line Fire Engine at Station 401, at a cost of $450,000. In order to accomplish this we need your support. The future of Volunteer Fire Service for the Ball Camp, Solway, Hardin Valley and Karns rests with you the resident.
Keep in mind; it is only through your tax-deductible donations that KVFD is able to fund our annual operating expenses. Failure to raise the funds necessary to continue operations, will result in the Karns Volunteer Fire Department going to a tax based or subscription/membership program in 2011.
If your Homeowners’ Association, Church or other group would like a speaker to address these issues, please call the department. For additional information on your fire department or to donate online, visit us at www.kvfd.com or call our office Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Marston
